Understanding Urgency and Safety Signals in Maritime Radiotelephone Communications is essential for all operators, as it helps distinguish Urgency from Safety and Distress. Situations require prompt attention but not distress. Proper signaling prevents confusion and accelerates responses through standardized emergency communication at sea. There are three major categories: Distress, Urgency, and Safety.
The International Urgency Signal is “PAN PAN”. It is spoken three times before the Urgency call. The ship’s master, or the person in charge of the mobile station, has the authority to send an Urgency Signal.
The Safety Signal: SECURITE
- Structure: repeated three times, followed by station call letters
- Typical scenarios: storm warnings, hazards to navigation, special aids
Reinforcing the importance of proper signal use in standardized communication supports global maritime safety and encourages ongoing training for all radio operators.
