Accurate log keeping in maritime and radio operations are essential for proper documentation, safety, accountability, and regulatory compliance.  Only qualified radio personnel may record service or maintenance information. Operators may delegate the task, but responsibility remains with the licensed individual. As a licensed radio operator, you are required to perform radio log keeping, service log entries, correct station logbook accuracy, and maintenance log requirements. The main radiotelephone operating position must be located on the vessel’s bridge or wheelhouse for bridge and distress-related communications, as this placement supports situational awareness and rapid communication in accordance with proper vessel communication procedures.

It is important to maintain historical operational data. Both proper radio record amending and retention must strictly follow the FCC guidelines. The proper method for amending entries without compromising record integrity is to strike through mistakes with a single line, add the corrected information, and date the revision. Emergency logs must be kept indefinitely until the FCC grants written permission for disposal, as these records may be used in investigations or legal review. Other non-distress-related entries must be kept for three years from the final entry date.
